I took this photo of my Grandmother's bedroom when I was in high school. She lives alone in a mobile home in Pacoima, Los Angeles. There isn't much to do out there and it's difficult for her to get Japanese groceries. In the 1940's, she was sent to Japanese internment camp along with 120,000 other Japanese-American citizens. Afterwards there was a lot of hardship but she managed to have a family and get by. My family always offers to move her closer to the ocean where my parents live. She always refuses and states that she's happy. One Christmas, she and I were looking through old family photos. As I was showing admiration for all of her stories she stopped me and said, "Alex- Grandma hasn't had a good life".
I always return to this image when creating a body of work. I'm not exactly sure why.
